Gecko's Epic Quest: Hula's Expedition Across Hawaii's Big Island
Under the Koa Tree, by L. R. Rodrigues, a children's book full of courage and hope, takes the backdrop of the Big Hawaiian Island. Tiny gecko, estranged from its family, travels thousands of kilometers across amazing landscapes in Hawaii, such as beaches, mountains, and some other natural wonders, unfolding an extraordinary gift which either will lead to the recovery of her past or probably pave a way into her future.
New Beginning Under the Koa Tree
The story starts with Hula, a small gecko taken by a storm that carries her away from her ohana (family). She anxiously scans her surroundings and finds a small koa tree. A tiny refuge, which is a mark of protection and resilience in the Hawaiian forest. The next morning, after the storm, Hula awakens to something incredible, a rainbow spanning the sky. In that serene, nearly enchanting instant, she discovers her unusual ability to alter colors to align with anything she comes into contact with.
Journey Always Remembered
Hula's journey starts, during which her body shifts colors based on the outfits of various companions she encounters. From Hakalau Forest to the smoldering crater of Kilauea Volcano, and then to the serene waters of Akaka Falls, Hula experiences all these adventures. Initially, she connects with a wildland firefighter and adopts a vivid red hue similar to his gear. Next, she pairs the vivid orange vest of a park ranger. It appears that each of these individuals, from a coffee grower to a fisher, and even a kumu hula (hula instructor), serves as a temporary home, with each color shift indicating a fresh chapter or segment in her journey.
The Quest for Ohana
Along the way, Hula continues to hope she will be reunited with her family. She observes very moving reunions, such as two small girls throwing themselves into their aunt and uncle's arms at a ranch. Those scenes pierce her heart with longing for her own gecko family. Her quest is not merely traveling around the island; it's almost a spiritual journey to discover where she is meant to be.
The Return Home
Ultimately, Hula discovers her path back to Hakalau Forest, the place where it all started. She visits a known location, and there she notices the young koa tree that has become so tall and robust, with many strong branches and leaves. She calms when another storm emerges, recalling the night she was separated; yet this time, this storm brought a tiny miracle, there's a rainbow, and she spots a smiling gecko, a fellow traveler named Kekoa, who also resides in this koa tree. Hula's journey comes full circle: she returns home with a new companion.
